Imam Cheikh Tidiane Cissé, also known as Cheikh Ahmad Tidjane Aliou Cissé, is a prominent figure of Islam in Senegal and around the world. A grandson of Cheikh Ibrahima Niass, known as Baye Niass, he has dedicated his life to spreading the Tijaniyya Sufi order and to uniting Muslims.

Born on September 22, 1955, in Medina Baye, Cheikh Tidiane Cissé is the son of Serigne Aliou Cissé and Sokhna Fatoumata Zahra Niass, the eldest daughter of Baye Niass. At the age of seven, he began learning the Qur’an and completed its memorization in 1968, under the supervision of his grandfather, Baye Niass. He later pursued advanced studies in Islamic sciences, Arabic literature, and foreign languages, including French, English, and Arabic.

Following the death of his brother, Imam Hassan Cissé, in 2008, Cheikh Tidiane Cissé was appointed Imam of the Grand Mosque of Medina Baye. He thus became the spiritual guardian of this religious city founded by his grandfather. His leadership has been marked by a deep commitment to peace, Muslim unity, and the promotion of Islamic values.
Cheikh Tidiane Cissé’s wisdom and spiritual charisma are recognized internationally. He is regularly ranked among the 500 most influential Muslims in the world in the annual study “The Muslim 500”, reaching 13th place in 2015, reflecting his global impact. His influence is also acknowledged by secular authorities; he has notably served as a Roving Ambassador of the Republic of Senegal and as General Commissioner for the Hajj pilgrimage to Mecca — roles that have strengthened his status and involvement in religious diplomacy and humanitarian affairs.
